season preview
John Finch , chairman of Haddington Concert Society describes the coming season:
On behalf of the trustees of Haddington Concert Society I am proud to present another season of world-class chamber concerts to inspire us through next winter.
We are delighted to welcome back Alasdair Beatson, Paul Chamberlain and Maximiliano Martin, all returning in new ensembles and with exciting repertoire. New performers are the Kammerphiharmonie, with a very attractive programme for small orchestra, and Savitri Grier and Richard Uttley, playing sonatas familiar and unfamiliar, including music by Menuhin’s Romanian teacher Enescu.
The repertoire chosen by our players allows us to explore works by one composer reworked by another: Bach/Mozart, Elgar/Payne, Ravel/Cohen, and two of Liszt’s works inspired by other composers, Bach and Mozart. The Liszt works conclude our gala recital given by Liszt specialist Leslie Howard, making a rare tour of Scotland.
We retain our enthusiasm for new music with works by Anthony Payne (the Primrose Piano Quartet) and Helena Winkelman (Marsac Festival Players). French chamber music features throughout with Fauré, Debussy, Ravel, Saint-Saens, Francaix; whilst with Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms and Beethoven we have not forgotten the core repertoire. And for contrast we present again the classical accordion (with the added attraction of violin and saxophone).
Our venue is small, presenting unique intimacy between performers and audience. Occasionally, not to say felicitously, we come close to exceeding the allowable capacity of 120 (which includes performers). We will of course give priority to subscribers and we will assume all will attend, and not sell tickets that would take us over the 120 seating capacity until five minutes before the start of a concert. If a subscriber should turn up after this and there is not a seat, we will refund the cost of that concert’s ticket at the subscriber rate. If you anticipate arriving after this, please let us know and we will ensure that there will be a seat for you.
Finally, after debating this for many years we have decided to sell all our tickets at one price: £11. We believe this represents fantastic value for money for all ages and certainly would not be possible without our generous subsidy from Enterprise Music Scotland.
I look forward to welcoming you to the Town House for another terrific season of 'Music Close Up'.
