"An artist of rare sensibility" The Times
Born in Haddington, the cellist Moray Welsh has strong ties to East Lothian. He has had a very distinguished career as a solo cellist and chamber music player, following the unique experience of studying for two years at the Moscow Conservatoire with the great Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, at the recommendation of Benjamin Britten. Between 1992 and 2007 he was Principal Cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra, relinquishing this position to diversify and concentrate on chamber music activities. For eighteen years he held a teaching post at the Royal Northern College of Music, and many of his ex-students now hold key positions both in London orchestras and abroad. Alongside playing the cello, he is also a painter in oils with a special interest in portraits, an activity which has slowly moved to centre stage in his professional life. www.moraywelsh.com |
